Wayne Rowe, CEO of Quality of Life, Announces Grant Award of $ 500,000

In a meeting with Dr. Ed Miller, Superintendent of Gadsden City Schools, Wayne Rowe, Chief Executive Officer of Quality of Life Health Services, Inc. announced today that Gadsden Family and Student Health Solutions is one of the school-based health center (SBHC) programs awarded funding from a recent, competitive federal grant. The approved grant application will provide funds allowing the Gadsden school-based health center, currently located between Oscar Adams Elementary and Litchfield Middle School at 927 Raley Street and on campus at Gadsden City High School to expand quality and affordable services to many more Gadsden City students, families and employees. Gadsden Family and Student Health Solutions plans are to utilize the funds available through the School-Based Health Centers Capital (SBHCC) program for the purpose of purchasing a mobile van equipped with medical, dental, computer and telemedicine equipment which will be used for administering an Electronic Patient Management (EPM) system, Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Electronic Dental Health Records (DHR). The mobile van will also contain Telemedicine equipment to link the clinical team located on the mobile van to Behavioral Health, Patient Education, Pediatric and other specialists. According to Rowe, “these investments in school-based health centers will help ensure effective, efficient, and high-quality care.” With the mobile van, “this grant will make it a lot easier for working moms and dads to help get their children the health care they need.”

The SBHC operated by Quality of Life Health Services, Inc. (QOLHS), a community health center, founded the SBHC program in a partnership with Gadsden City Schools in 2003. This needed funding will allow for expansion of the clinical programs operated at the SBHC center and make services more accessible to all students in the Gadsden City school district. A mobile unit that can travel between the school campuses is designed to improve access, increase the number of students utilizing the program and remove the transportation barrier that students might face. By purchasing a mobile unit that is fully-equipped to provide medical and dental services, high-risk children will secure access to much-needed health care and school attendance should improve. The equipment purchases will result in addressing key needs within the SBHC project which are: improving access to primary care and dental health, ensuring the early identification of medical and oral health conditions and operating an efficient and cost-effective health center. The use of electronic medical and dental records will assist in the documentation of clinical services, tracking of quality indicators and improving the billing and collection system. The current school based health center, Gadsden Family and Student Health Solutions, will continue to operate on the campus of the Oscar Adams Elementary School. It is projected that the number of students served will increase by a minimum of 1,800 during the first year of utilization of the mobile SBHC van, by traveling to all schools in the Gadsden City system. Dr. Ed Miller, Superintendent of the Gadsden City Board of Education, met with Rowe today to be notified in person about the grant award. Miller acknowledged that “Gadsden City Schools is excited to be a cooperating partner with Quality of Life and to have this opportunity to bring health care services to our students and the community. Quality of Life leadership and staff is to be commended for their tireless efforts to bring quality health improvement to the City of Gadsden.”
